Unique “Experimental” / “Trial” Encased Postage Stamp Ten Cents, SILVER ENCASEMENT Usage, Plain Frame
Unique Rarity-10. Reed-JG1057, EP-Unlisted, HB-Unlisted, Scott-Unlisted. Ten Cents. SILVER ENCASEMENT. 1863 U.S. Stamp Issue Usage. Plain Frame. “Experimental” / “Trial” Piece. Choice About Uncirculated.
An outstanding, historic ultimate rarity, being Unique and a wonderful example in the development of the Civil War era Encased Postage Stamps. The following description is presented as originally described in the Stack’s auction catalog of the noted John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Sale, page 188, where it was offered as Lot 639:

“Regular 10 Cents Green Stamp. Silver Case. Mica facing. Unlisted in HB, EP, S, Reed, Slabaugh. 24mm. As made. The stamp is bright and clear, with the denomination well centered in the frame. The mica is a little rough, particularly on the right. The case is sound, deeply toned in rich coin silver gray shade. Same manufacturing style as the 2 Cent Bank Check to be described later, the two-piece case being quite different from the regular issue Gault type not only because it is made apparently in silver but also because the back has been closed in a different fashion. Unique and Unpublished before now.”

Pedigree, Ex: John J. Ford Collection Sale, Part 4, June 23, 2004, Lot # 639, Color Illustrated, (no lot tag present) being described as totally Unique and Unpublished before then. An outstanding and important opportunity for Encased Postage Collectors to acquire a wholly Unique example, with a truly remarkable pedigree.
