DS in Japanese, one page, 23 x 18, circa 1890–1912. Untranslated document in which Emperor Meiji confers the Order of the Golden Kite upon a distinguished member of the military. Boldly signed in the center in thick black ink by the emperor. In very good to fine condition, with scattered foxing. Established in 1890 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Golden Kite was a military award commemorating the mythic Jimmu Tenno, the ‘Romulus of Japan.’ It was awarded to soldiers and military officers who demonstrated bravery, leadership, or command in battle. This is one of the few orders made exclusively for the Japanese military, while most others could be given to civilians, diplomats, and other officials including those from other countries.
