Rare pairing of two DSs in Japanese, each one page, approximately 23 x 18, circa 1890–1912. Two untranslated documents in which the emperor of Japan confers the Order of the Golden Kite upon a distinguished member of the military, one for the Fifth Class and one for the Third Class. Both are housed within their original wooden presentation boxes with green ribbons, one of which retains a paper label affixed to the cover. One document also includes the original printed sheet with information for the recipient. Documents are tightly rolled and in fine to very fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned cabinet photos of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, and a postcard also depicting them.

Established in 1890 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Golden Kite was a military award commemorating the mythic Jimmu Tenno, the ‘Romulus of Japan.’ It was awarded to soldiers and military officers who demonstrated bravery, leadership, or command in battle. This is one of the few orders made exclusively for the Japanese military, while most others could be given to civilians, diplomats, and other officials including those from other countries. The majority of these Order of the Golden Kite awards were given in the lower sixth or seventh class, making these middle-class examples scarcer than usual.
