Part of the last notorious outlaw gang in the Old West. When he and his brothers Robert and Gratton attempted to rob the Condon Bank in Coffeville, Kansas on October 15, 1892, only Emmett would survive, although he had been shot 20 times. Sentenced to life imprisonment, he surprisingly proved to be a model prisoner and was released in 1907. Maintaining his rehabilitation, Dalton married his childhood sweetheart and became an ardent champion of law and order in his popular writings and lectures. Signed book: When the Daltons Rode. First edition, first printing. NY: Doubleday, Doran, and Co, 1931. Hardcover with dustjacket, 5.75 x 8.25, 313 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page, “To Mr. Walter Price from Emmett Dalton, May 8, 1931.” Uniform toning to signed page and inside pages, separation along front hinge, some light foxing to pastedowns, sunning to spine, and light cover wear, otherwise very good condition. Dustjacket has several tape repairs, to separations, scattered toning, as well as chipping and surface loss. A rare Old West signature in any form!
