Prolific French journalist, novelist, and activist (1840–1902) best known as one of the leading figures of naturalism and for his inflammatory 1898 open letter, ‘J’Accuse!,’ which exposed the anti-Semitism of the French press and government in the infamous Dreyfus Affair. ALS in French, signed “Emile Zola,” one page, 4 x 4.5, no date. In full (translated): “I will wait for you tomorrow Monday at 2 pm. Tell Monsieur Hubert that I thank him and am very grateful to him. Indeed, I believe that I have some interesting things to tell you regarding those astounding critiques on a work which I have not yet finished.” Double-matted and framed with a caricature to an overall size of 12.75 x 9.75. In fine condition, with central horizontal fold and show-through from a small square of tape staining on the reverse lightly touching two words of text. A wonderfully sarcastic response to his critics!
