ALS in French, one page, 5 x 8, December 15, 1886. Letter written from Medan, in full (translated): "I very much authorize you to publish the translation of the two articles of which you speak to me and I would like you to accept the assurance of my most distinguished feelings." In very good to fine condition, with a block of light toning, and a few small stains.

Zola's fourteenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series, L'Œuvre (The Work or The Masterpiece), was published in novel from in 1886 by Charpentier. L'Œuvre is a fictional account of Zola's friendship with Paul Cézanne—the pair grew up together in Aix-en-Provence—and a fairly accurate portrayal of the Parisian art world in the mid 19th century. The novel's story of a groundbreaking artist unable to live up to his potential is often blamed for ending the friendship between Cézanne and Zola.
