He studied at Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and developed his own unique style, later termed Sythetic Symbolism. He attended the Studio of Cormon, where he met Toulouse-Lautrec, but was soon expelled for insubordination. His friendships with other artists, especially Van Gogh and Gaugin influenced his work. In turn his own work may have influenced them more than was ever attributed. Bernard's art is highly regarded, and it can be found in the world's greatest art museums, including Musee d'Orsay, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Rijksmuseum. *
