This is a self-portrait of the German artist Emil Maetzel (1877-1955). It was taken in 1912, when the artist was at the peak of his creativity. As a painter, printmaker and sculptor he had developed his very distinctive style that was inspired by the Expressionists of the artist group Die Brücke. He was additionally active as a curator in Hamburg and co-founder of the Hamburg Secession.



The photograph is inscribed and dated verso in green crayon ‘Emil Maetzel Selbstbildnis 1912’. The print is in appealing condition with slight traces of wear, like a vertical creasing line in the left area, minimal marginal wear and scratches on the surface. The dimensions are 12.4 x 17.1 cm.



Emil Maetzel (1877-1955)

Emil Maetzel studied architecture in Hannover, Dresden and Paris. As the urban construction manager of Hamburg, he was to jointly lead the construction of the central station in Hamburg. In architecture, he was a representative of the movement Neues Bauen. He was married to the artist Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen. Emil Maetzel had his own studio since 1921. He was a co-founder of the Hamburg Secession, as its director he served for five years. In 1933, he was forced into retirement by the National Socialists. Five of his works were seized in 1937. After World War Two, he became the second director of the re-established Hamburg Secession. Works of his can be viewed for example at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg and the Hamburg Kunsthalle. (tm)
