Embroidered silk banner, approx. 14” by 13”, shield shape, not including fringe. Red background with white letters and purple trim. Reads “Gen. Geo. A. Custer. Council. No. 22, Jr. O.U.A.M.” The order or banner is in fair condition showing distress and opening to the weave and aging, staining. Fair to good. The Order of United American Mechanics Jr. was an interesting political organization founded in about 1853 and peaked in membership about 1930’s. The organization was founded in Philadelphia and was original called the Union of Workers. Its agenda was specifically aimed at subverting immigrant prosperity in America. It was essentially anti-immigrant, anti-catholic. It had links to the No Nothing party and the KKK in the 1920’s. An interesting political artifact. Est: $500 - $1,000
