This ‘Hanfu’ women’s robe was created in China during the mid-19th century. It is embroidered front and back with a badge of office depicting the rank of a Mandarin Duck, of a 7th rank civilian official. This rank reflects the rank of the wearer’s husband who would have been an official of the court, presumably a provincial officer. The robe would have been worn with a pleated skirt of a complimentary color. These gowns were large in size so the wearer was given an air of importance. The embroidery further depicts birds and peonies. The butterflies – symbolizing happiness – are embroidered in Peking knot stitch. The buttons are made of pink stone.

The robe shows signs of wear. The colors are vegetable dyes and are well-preserved. The lining, which would have been pink silk, has been removed. A few imperfections, small tears and heavy stains are visible. The border around the badges has come loose. The robe has a total length of approx. 118 cm (neck to hem) and the width measures approx. 161 cm (sleeve end to sleeve end).
