Ely,NV - White Pine County - 1927-1932 - Nevada Railroad Passes --Rare :
Lot of three railroad passes for the years 1927 (#187), 1931 (#171) and 1932 (#608), all issued to R.B. Delafield, General Agent, Nickel Plate Road. The 1927 pass is for The Nevada Central Railroad Co., signed by the General Manager. The 1931 pass is for the Eureka-Nevada Railway and is signed by the President, and countersigned, by C.B. Sexton. The 1932 pass is for the Nevada Northern Railway Co. and signed by the General Manager and countersigned by M.J. Meyers. Delafield has signed on the reverse of the 3 passes. The Nevada Central RR ran between Austin and Battle Mountain from the years 1880 to 1938. The Eureka-Nevada Railway formerly operated at the Eureka-Palisade line until 1912, when George Whittell assumed control. The new line was run by the Nevada Transportation Co. Beset with numerous problems over the years in the form of washouts and interrupted service, the line was abandoned in 1938 [Ref: Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California, Vol. 1, by David Myrick, UNR Press, 1962, 1990, pg. 107]. The Nevada Northern Railway Co. was a subsidiary of Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. (the result of a 1904 merger between the White Pine Copper Co. and others) and was constructed for the purpose of hauling ore from the mines to the mills in Ely. Eventually the line was used to transport blister copper from the smelter to the transcontinental rail link with the Southern Pacific Railroad [Ref: history.nevadanorthernrailway.net/nevconhist/nevconhistory.htm]. Nickel Plate Road is actually the name of a rail line in Indiana and parts of Ohio, although it is uncertain whether or not the name on the above passes refers to that line.
