After his appearance on “The Steve Allen Show,” Elvis did two shows at the Mosque Theater in Richmond, Virginia, in 1956. Elvis was in the green room rehearsing and then he disappeared.  The photographer found him in a nearby hallway for the money shot.

Photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer (1929-2014) had the unique privilege of documenting a 21-year-old Elvis Presley when he was on the cusp of national stardom from 1956-58. Wertheimer’s photographs show a pensive Elvis, just doing what he did: performing, spending time with his family or fans, napping, reading letters and papers, combing his hair, or listening to music. Not only are the intimate photographs of Elvis a product of Wertheimer’s artistic brilliance, they are also a witness to an incredible time in the history of photography, as well as to the birth of a star and a new chapter in the history of music. Wertheimer’s work has been the subject of several museum exhibitions throughout the world.
