Collection of seven items related to Elvis, his girlfriend Anita Wood, and their relationship with the family of his friend Sgt. William A. Norwood, consisting of four vintage photos and three letters by Wood. Photos include: a glossy 3.75 x 2.75 candid of Elvis and Wood about to kiss while sitting outside the Norwood residence in July 1958; a glossy 5.5 x 3.5 candid of Elvis in his Fort Hood barracks in May 1958; a glossy 3.5 x 3.5 candid of Wood in a lovely white dress; and a gorgeous 8 x 10 photo of Wood in a bathing suit, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Sgt. & Mrs. Norwood, Thanks for everything! Anita Wood.” Letters from Wood include three ALSs, totaling seven pages on seven sheets, all dated 1958. One letter, September 12, 1958, in part: “Well, Elvis just told me he is leaving the 18th…You know, I may not even get to see him again before he leaves here. The Army may not give them any time off…I won’t be able to see him because of the reporters from the newspapers and magazines. The day he leaves will be the worst day of my life. I won’t even be able to see him.” In overall fine condition. Sgt. Norwood was given the assignment of training Presley upon his arrival at Fort Hood, and the two soon became friends. Homesick, Elvis spent much of his time at the Norwood residence, often with his girlfriend Anita Wood. Anita became friends with Olly Norwood, the sergeant’s wife, and when Anita would travel the two ladies frequently corresponded. Presley left Fort Hood on September 19th, a day later than Wood expected, and his division shipped out to Germany shortly thereafter. While in Germany he met his future wife, Priscilla, although he still wrote home to Anita and they resumed their relationship upon his return. An enormously interesting group of material from one of the turning points in Elvis’s career and personal life.
