Elmer Schooley (1916-2007)
Collection of Seven (7) original woodblock prints by Elmer Schooley. The signed woodcuts come directly from the collection of a Schooley apprentice, who provided the anecdotes that accompany the descriptions.
a) Sun Field, 20 1/2” x 26 1/2”, signed and numbered 11/30.
b) Woody Lithograph, 23” x 25” signed and numbered Proof 1. “This was done in green ink, which was rare. Schooley ran this as a wood block print first, then transferred to stone lithograph. He called it, ‘Woody Lithograph’.”
c) Poplar, 73” x 21”, signed and numbered 10/unlimited, inscribed, For Art. “We were rolling the wood block by hand, but it was so big that we got lazy after printing a few copies and decided to run it through a press. That image came out fine, but the press broke the block and ruined it. There are only a few copies in existence.”
d) Stoneware Litho, 15 3/4” x 19 3/4”, signed and numbered Ed. 34
e) Garden Walk, 20 1/4” x 26 1/2”, signed and numbered 10/30. Presented to his apprentice as a gift, and inscribed by Schooley, “Happy Birthday to Art”
f) Schooley’s Garden, 26 1/2” x 20 1/2”, signed and numbered 24/30. “Schooley lived on a hill, and this was the view from his front porch.”
g) Dead Raven, 25 1/2” x 22”, signed and numbered 19/30. “This was one of Schooley’s best sellers.”
All 7 lithos are unframed and range from good to excellent condition, with some damage to paper edges, not affecting images.
