This is an original porcelain enamel railroad sign for "Ellis" Patent Bumping Post. The Mechanical Manufacturing Co. and Elisha W. Ellis received the highest award for its kind at the 1904 Worlds Fair in St Louis. A safety item located at the end of the railroad track, this sign was most probably affixed to the bumping post considering the flanged edge on the sign. The Bumping Post was awarded a US PAT. in 1885 and was invented by Elisha W. Ellis. The sign shows a dark blue background with bright white lettering. Shows some loss to the finish, but the center of the sign is crisp. Measures 12.25"x16 3/8'. A picture of the patent blue print is shown, but not included.
