Ellen Mary Rope (1855-1934) Demeter and Persephone A framed plaster relief plaque 34cm x 36cm Note: This plaque was commissioned by Admiral Talbot Carpenter, Kiplin Hall, Yorkshire, a patron of Ellen Mary Rope, and is one of two known. Rope studied at Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros and began producing low reliefs in plaster, much influenced by him and by early Florentine Rennaissance decorative sculpture. Rope frequently exhibited with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Rope worked for Della Robbia Pottery, Birkenhead from 1896 and became an architectural sculpter of note, although much of her work is now lost or remains unidentified.
