From the Applewhite-Clark Collection. Wife of early Texian Wilson Irwin Riddle, sister of Judge George Menefee, of Indianola, Texas. Mr. Riddle was an acquaintance of John Coffee Hays. In 1843, Elizabeth Riddle and Mrs. Elliott, who both lived in San Antonio, had been instrumental in introducing John Hays to the Calvert sisters when they had traveled from Seguin to visit Elizabeth. Later, at Thanksgiving of 1843, Hays was visiting friends in Seguin, Texas and took the opportunity to visit with the Calverts. Susan immediately caught his eye and the courtship began. After that, anytime that Susan would visit Elizabeth in San Antonio while he was there, he would make every effort to see her. Daguerreotype 2.75" x 3.25"
