Elie Nadelman (1882-1946) Two Circus Women
Elie Nadelman (1882-1946) Two Circus Women c. 1928 terracotta 15.5 x 7 Elie Nadelman's interest in subdued facial features and stylized contours lent themselves to a series of papier-mache and terracotta figures produced from 1928-1935. In Barbara Haskell's book, "Elie Nadelman: Sculptor of Modern Life", the author notes that these works are "...uninterrupted by surface detail, their seamless, fluid curvilinearity endowed them with an elusive mystery, more psychologically nuanced than in any of Nadelman's previous work." This paired figure example of Nadelman's late 1920s terracotta work exemplifies the psycological connection between two figures that had become a running theme in his work.
