American mathematician and physicist (1811-1889) remembered for his studies of the Geomagnetic Storm of 1859 and the Aurora Borealis; he oversaw construction of the Loomis Observatory in Hudson, Ohio, completed in 1838, now the oldest observatory in the United States still sitting in its original location. ALS, one page, 4.75 x 8, March 21, 1882. Handwritten letter from "Yale College," in full: "My time is so much occupied that I cannot undertake to prepare an article for the Encyclopedia Britannica." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
