The Elgin National Watch Company, originally incorporated as the National Watch Company in August 1864 in Chicago, Illinois, was established by Philo Carpenter, Howard Z. Culver, Benjamin W. Raymond, George M. Wheeler, Thomas S. Dickerson, and W. Robbins. That same year, the founders recruited seven skilled watchmakers from the Waltham Watch Company in Massachusetts to join their new venture. For nearly a century, Elgin operated the world's largest watchmaking complex in Elgin, Illinois, producing timepieces under the Elgin, Lord Elgin, and Lady Elgin brands until ceasing operations in 1968. The Crescent Watch Case Company, based in Newark, New Jersey, was a prominent American case manufacturer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for producing gold-filled and other high-quality watch cases, Crescent often guaranteed its gold-filled cases for periods such as 25 years, indicating the durability of the gold layer before wear-through. Crescent cases were widely used by various American watch manufacturers, including Elgin, Waltham, and Illinois. Case diameter (excluding the bow): 2.25"dia. Case thickness: 0.75"W. Case Diameter with bow: 3"L x 2.25" dia. Bow: 20mm x 15mm. The overall weight of the pocket watch is 4.3 ounces.
