Boxed set of catalogs from the Duke & Duchess of Windsor auction, held by Sotheby's from 11-19 September 1997 in New York. Complete set of 2 first and only edition catalogs are bound in softcovers and housed in a photographic slipcase. Set is accompanied by a third book, a spellbinding 61pp. photo-illustrated biography of the Duke and Duchess, complete with a diagram of the genealogy of H.R.H. The Duke of Windsor, a glossary of terms, timeline of the unlikely couple's lives and bibliography. Volumes are subtitled, ''The Public Collections'' and ''The Private Collections''. Among the items featured in the public collections volume are photographs of the couple, medals, furnishings and household accoutrements from their Paris residence. Private collection comprises such personal effects as Wallis Simpson and Edward's exquisite wardrobe, jewelry and articles bearing their cyphers as Duke and Duchess, as well as their ribbons and trophies from equestrian and canine hobbies. Set measures 12'' x 9.25'' x 3''. Bumping to corners of slipcase at open edge, else fine. A fascinating set illustrating the backdrop to the legendary royal romance.
