DS, signed “Anna Eleanor Roosevelt,” seven pages, 9.25 x 13, August 15, 1952. Standard book contract by which Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok grant to G. P. Putnam’s Sons the “sole and exclusive right to print, publish, and sell in book form…a certain work now entitled: A Political Primer for Women (tentative).” Signed at the conclusion by Roosevelt and Hickok, as well as a witness and G. P. Putnam’s Sons representative. The document is stapled at the top to its original paper folder. In fine condition, with expected document wear and cancellation stamps throughout (not affecting signatures). Hickok was a pioneering woman journalist and developed a close friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt while covering the 1932 presidential campaign. She encouraged the First Lady to provide women reporters with unprecedented access and was an early supporter of Eleanor’s writing career. The reason for the cancellation is not given, but Roosevelt and Hickok did go on to co-author a book, Ladies of Courage, which was issued in 1954 by the same publisher as here, G. P. Putnam’s Sons. That book, about women’s entrance into politics, may have been a revamped version of the book planned in this cancelled contract.
