"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Fantastic typed letter signed by Eleanor Roosevelt, written from her home in Hyde Park on 5 September 1949. Mrs. Roosevelt staunchly defends her husband's character and policies, foregoing niceties in starting the letter, ''Dear Mr. Rogers: I think you must have forgotten the circumstances which surrounded us in the spring of 1933. Ex-President Hoover had asked my husband if he would come previous to the Inauguration and go over some of the problems. My husband had felt that that was impossible for him to do until he had full responsibility and power. The conditions that faced him when he was inaugurated required a complete change in policies…You say: 'A man running for president knows the conditions that will confront him.' That shows that you have no idea what happened in 1933. Conditions changed from moment to moment and my husband did not have the faintest idea of what he was going to have to face from day to day. Entirely new situations developed and everything…was done on an experimental basis…there are many times when men in public life have had to be inconsistent. If you are not flexible you are not suited to public life…My husband was of Dutch and Scotch ancestry and he had very strong convictions. They all went by the board because he was confronted with two crises, both of which had to be met in ways which he felt did not jibe with his original convictions. I doubt that I could clear up any of your problems because I gather that you must convince yourself. I can only suggest that you read history and perhaps in that way you may find the answers to inconsistencies.'' Letter, measuring 7'' x 10.5'' on two separate pages, has staple holes and showthrough of glue from framing. Wood frame with red mat measures 30'' x 18.25''. Very good condition.
