Eleanor Roosevelt. T.L.S. on White Hous
Eleanor Roosevelt. T.L.S. on White House letterhead, May 29, 1935, in F.D.R.'s first term. Unique contents, on decorating the White House! Particularly scarce because Mrs. Roosevelt's activities revolved more about the nation's concerns, acting as a travelling "eyes and ears" for the President, than about decorating the White House. "My dear Miss Bryant, I was very much interested in your sample of wall paper and have made inquiries as to its possible use here in Washington, but they tell me that for various reasons they have decided it is much better to have the walls painted at frequent intervals with oil paint. I will be very glad to keep you in mind, however, if there is ever an opportunity to use your paper." The Depression at that time would also preclude ostentatious decorating. First Ladies' letters about decoration of the White House are extremely rare. Original light folds, else fine.
