Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 15 x 9.25, April 2, 1811. As governor of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Josiah Colbey as “Major of the Third Regiment of Infantry in the First Brigade, and Eleventh Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth.” Signed in the upper left by Gerry and countersigned at the conclusion by Benjamin Homans as secretary. The seal affixed to the upper left remains only partially intact. Intersecting folds, several cancellation notations passing through the text and part of Gerry’s signature, and a noticeable area of paper loss to upper left where seal is absent, otherwise fine condition.
