Elbridge Gerry Autograph Letter Signed. Re: War Declaration Signer Elbridge Gerry Autograph Letter S
Declaration Signer Elbridge Gerry Autograph Letter Signed "E. Gerry." 7.2" x 9.7", one page letter, dated September 10, 1777, from Philadelphia. The letter contains information about the Battle of Brandywine that was fought on September 11, 1777 no doubt only hours after this letter was composed. This battle resulted in a major victory for the British forces and allowed them to capture the city of Philadelphia. The letter from Gerry reads in part, "I have only time to inform you, that my next will probably hand you an account of an important event, wich (sic) is hourly expected to take place between ye Armies of Generals Washington and Howe…The enemy are about 27 miles from this City; ye Army and Inhabitants in high spirits." A fascinating letter which details exact events and troop movements of this decisive battle. Elbridge Gerry is also known for being one of the brave men who signed his name to both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.

The letter is in good condition; it has the usual folds, and some adhesive damage on the verso from being glued, at one time, into an album. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
