Elaborately Decorated, Silver Mounted George Dunkel Full Stock Kentucky Percussion Rifle

Silver finished brass blade front sight and dovetailed notch rear, with "G. Dunkle" on the top flat of the barrel, a drum-style bolster, and a lightly scroll engraved hammer and lock, the latter marked "JOSEPH GOLCHER" ahead of the hammer and equipped with double set triggers. Smooth, brass tipped full length stock, with a hardwood ramrod, handrest trigger guard, raised comb, engraved patch box lid and a curved brass buttplate. A number of engraved German silver plates accent the stock, including 4 on each side of the forearm, along panel on the underside, scroll and heart designs on the wrist, an arrow on the underside of the buttstock, and an American Eagle on the cheekpiece. Dunkle was active in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania circa 1828-1846.

Condition: Fair. The barrel shows a mixed brown patina overall, grayer along the edges, with scattered handling marks, mild spotting, and pitting around the percussion drum, with the lock hardware showing a duller gray color with heavier pitting. The stock is period repaired, with a mended break at the wrist, replaced material, a brass reinforcement plate below the lock, chips and scratches. The patch box lid has been bent and straightened. A few inlays are missing. A German silver panel is absent from the left side of the wrist. Mechanically needs work.
