Elaborate Pair of Extremely Fine, High Quality Gold Inlaid and Silver Mounted Middle Eastern Flintlo
Blade front and notch rear sights, with a fine Damascus pattern on the barrel, which starts out hexadecagonal (16-sided), moving to octagonal on the rear half, with gold borders, floral designs, a proof stamp on the upper left flat and a panel of untranslated writing on top. The tang is also gold floral inlaid. Lock plate is extensively engraved, with floral vines on the frizzen and hammer, gold inlay on the hammer and flash pan, scenes of animals and drummers on the lock plate and a roller equipped frizzen spring. Smooth full length stock, with extensive leafy vine design wire inlay, horn tipped ramrod, raised engraved and gold washed furniture, including a stand of flags on the trigger guard finial, arrays of arms and flowers on the reverse plate and inscription panel, and a buttcap with arrays of arms, flags and flowers. Notes from the consignor attribute this arms to King Farouk of Egypt (1920 – 1965), the last reigning King of Egypt. Farouk was overthrown in 1952, and the monarchy was abolished in 1953. Starting his exile in Monaco, where he would later attain citizenship, he settled in Rome, where he would spend the rest of his life. Notorious for his spending habits during his reign, the acquisition of such a fine pair of pistols as these would not be out of character for Farouk.
