El Dorado Cole Thornton (John Wayne) Hero Scarf
Of course American Westerns and John Wayne are synonymous, however there are a dozen or so that go down as some of the great movies (western or otherwise) of all time. El Dorado (1967) directed by the legendary Howard Hawks is on the top of the list. So many of the characters that leapt from the screen have become part of the Western lexicon: Wayne's gunslinger Thornton, Robert Mitchum's Sherriff Harrah, and especially a young James Caan's evil sociopathic Mississippi. Wayne has more than his share of "blood on his hands" in this complex story. When he accidently shoots his young guard Luke (played by Johnny Crawford), Luke's sister, Joey (Michele Carey), shoots Wayne, who ends up with a back wound, and blood on his hands (which he angrily wipes on Joey's shirt!). The story bursts forth from there in all directions, creating an epic that has stayed fresh through the years. This is Wayne's iconic yellow scarf, which we see him put on so methodically in the beginning of the film, and keep on throughout the epic. The hero screen worn scarf has some blood on one of the tips, perhaps he discovers he's shot Luke, or from his "blood on his hands" scene with Joey, or in the big shootout at the end. Wayne gets injured more in this movie than any other, and the film actually ends with him and and also wounded Mitchum walking down main street wielding crutches!. The yellow US Cavalry scarf of John Wayne's in his role as Cole Thornton in "El Dorado" was originally acquired from the set by the Costumer and had been stored in Wardrobe archives. The inseam has the official Western Costumer stamp with "DUKE" written in ink. This amazing piece of legendary Hollywood history comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
