Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. He writes to his wife Mamie on 8 February 1943. It reads in full: ''Dearest: When did I write you last? Two days ago or 2 weeks? Here, time finally means nothing except as I get my hands on a new battalion and then get it when I want it. It is now 7 1/2 months since I left Washington and alternatively I feel it is only a few days and then at least 10 years. If you had been close by when I received a letter from you the other day I would have boxed your ears. After all the very best love letters I know how to write you say, 'I hope you mean them'. Maybe I'd do better to temper my language but goddammit, as long as I love you the way I do, why in the name of the pink toed prophet should I not say I do? I guess you'll just have to put up with the way I say things and start to teaching me all over again when this ----- war is finished! There is no one that could ever remotely have a chance, with me, of taking your place. That's flat. I have just received a small ship, apparently sent here in the idea I'd have definite use for such a vessel. I don't know exactly what I'm to do with it; so think I'll give it back to the Navy. (British) Since I do not have time to read, I have no idea of how much detail is included in the news you have of us. But I think the papers must keep you informed of most developments - and of course tell you many things that are not true. But that's publicity. Lots of love to you - always. Don't forget me, please. Ike''. Eisenhower allegedly fell in love with with his female driver, Kay Summersby, while serving in Europe during this time. Original mailing envelope is included, signed ''Dwight D Eisenhower'' and postmarked 8 February 1943. Runs 2pp. on ruled paper. Measures 8'' x 10.25''. Near fine.
