Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as commander of the Allied invasion of North Africa. On 22 December [1942, Algiers] he writes to his wife, Mamie: ''Darling: Milton is about to take off for home...He will be able to tell you more about our daily lives (rather existence,) our problems and worries and so on than I could in ten pages of writing. He will tell you also that I stay in pretty fair condition in spite of it all; but I must start getting some exercise. Today I received a nice letter from [son] John...It's difficult to explain how very isolated one gets to feel here. I noticed Milton was complaining constantly about about news four days old! Most of mine, if any, is a month old! - Anyway, that gives you an idea of how alone one grows to feel, and why letters, messages and visits are so greatly welcomed...I hope you have a beautiful holiday season...Today is the shortest day of the year. I devoutly hope that by the time the next one comes around we will be able to see the beginning of a victorious end. With the job not even very well started I still find myself so frequently looking forward to the days of peace, in which, no matter that the complexities of our problems and the stringency of living conditions; we can be together! Maybe you'll even go fishing with me sometime!...Always your, Ike''. With original envelope. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
