Dwight D. Eisenhower WWII autograph letter signed to his wife Mamie. Dated simply 28 August, it reads in part: ''My darling...one of my troubles is the physical discomfort I suffer in trying to wield a pen...I was glad to see by your latest latter that you did get in a visit with Whitely & Gault. They are fine men!...If my hand keeps hurting I'm going to learn to write with my teeth. I have had no recent letter from [son] John. His summer was certainly a busy one, and I know he enjoyed it thoroughly. I sent him several messages praising the Field Art, so it looks as if he's go into the infantry. My advice was apparently not in line with his own ideas. Well, it's his life - so that's that!...T.J. was out to see us the other eve. We had a movie at our house, and I did something I should have done long ago; I asked out all the WAC officers that came with the original crowd. There were 3 men and a dozen women. I'll bet it's the first time in this theater that there were more women than men at any gathering of that sort. Gave them a buffet supper - movie - all out of the house by 10:45 & Butch and I in bed by 11:00. Not so bad as the movie was fairly funny. Bob Hope. By the way, he came here to see me the other day. Seems a more attractive person to me off the stage than on it. I'm no Hope fan so far as the movies are concerned, but he's done a grand job here in entertaining soldiers - including those in Sicily. I believe he has been the favorite of the soldiers...Lots of love to you - and for Lord's sake don't limit your thinking of me to the occasion when you happen to hear somebody is starting a flight in this direction. I love you, all the time. Always your / Ike''. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Creasing, else near fine.
