"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed, dated 26 September 1944 on ''Allied Expeditionary Force / Office of the Supreme Commander'' stationery. Letter is addressed to Eisenhower's brother, Edgar, and discusses the complicated relationship with the press during wartime: ''…You complain a bit because of the demands that people make upon my brothers -- just because they are my brothers. I am quite ready to admit that personal publicity has its serious drawbacks; in fact, there is very little else that can be said about it. However, if these demands are made upon you, what do you calculate to be the price that I have to pay? To the extent possible in a position such as mine, I have constantly shunned the headlines. This has not been entirely due merely to a sense of modesty, but because of the nature of an Allied Command. Any 'glory grabbing' on the part of the top man would quickly wreck an institution such as this. Happily, this official requirement has coincided exactly with my personal desire. One result of it is that, almost without exception, the 500 newspaper and radio men accredited to this organization are my friends…What I am trying to say is that some publicity is mandatory -- otherwise American soldiers would not know they had an American commander, interested in their welfare. The problem is to take it and use it in the amount required by the job; but to avoid distraction and self-glorification…'' Signed ''Dwight'' in black ink. Letter measures 8'' x 10.5'' on two pages, with minor toning and two folds from mailing. Near fine.
