One page, 8” x 10.5”, on Columbia University letterhead, New York, July 24, 1948, in ink, to Henry Luhrs, Shippenburg, Pennsylvania. “<I>The invitation you extend me is an honor far above my own merits.</B></I>” So writes Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969) as he declines an invitation to speak at the 85th Anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. This letter was written while Eisenhower was President of the Columbia University, a position he held from 1948-1953. He relinquished the position to run for President of the United States.
