In 1870, Fort Berthold was the largest "city" in Dakota Territory, with a population of several thousand people, including the entire Arikara tribe, who, in 1863, had joined the Hidatsa-Mandan for mutual protection. The tall, log scaffolds seen throughout the village were used to suspend and cure the extensive crops of corn and other vegetables raised by these expert farmers.
