Eight CDVs of Prominent Free Blacks. A wonderful and evocative set of portraits of middle-class free blacks circa 1860-1880. Includes images by Mora of New York, and Henry Ulke of Washington, the photographer residing in the Peterson Boarding House the night Lincoln was assassinated. One image is identified as a teacher (possibly from Barbados) as well as an actor. An excellent assemblage illustrating optimism among free blacks, following the Civil War, that would be crushed by the end of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow at the end of the nineteenth century.
