most from around the Civil War (1857 - 1867), except one which is an early typed letter. Includes two bills of lading for deliveries in Washington, DC. One from the Washington Express Co., 9 Nov. 1865, 4.25" x 5.25"; the other from McFarland, Stephenson & Co., 2 Jan. 1866; 4" x 6.5". Third bill of lading from Southern Express Company, 1880, to Baltimore, MD; 5.5" x 8.25". Fourth is bill of lading on the steamer Fung Shuey on the Black Star Line from New York to New Orleans, 21 Apr. 1866; 6.25" x 10.5". Fifth is freight bill M. O. Stage Company to People's Transportation Co., July 1867; 4.5" x 8.25", with illustration of a sidewheeler. Sixth is typed letter, Little Rock, AR, 4 Nov. 1883, on letterhead of Texas & California Stage Company; 8.25" x 11", with illustration of stagecoach and four horses. Seventh is receipt from Buckmaster's Hillsboro, Alton, and St. Louis Daily Express, for package picked up at Alton (IL), 17 Oct. 1857; 3.5" x 6". Eighth is receipt for package containing $7590.00, being sent to Richmond, VA, on Southern Express Company, 15 Sept. 1863 - presumably Confederate dollars. Paper quality (or lack thereof) and poor printing certainly characteristic of southern paper products a couple years into the war.

The Thomas Minckler Collection of Western Americana

Condition: Expected folds, most with light toning except last, which is more heavily toned. Some with light surface soil and holes where attached to packages. About as expected for "working" paper.
