Egypt, Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy III in the name of Berenike, 246-221 B.C., AR dodekadrachm (52.97 gm.), Diademed, veiled bust of Berenike within border of dots/Cornucopia flanked by two pilei, Svoronos 998, pl. XXXV, 2. EF with small flan crack per usual. The dodekadrachms struck posthumously for Berenike by her brother, Ptolemy III, were the largest silver coins issued in Classical Antiquity. These numismatic masterpieces boast truly medallic proportions which gave the die-cutter an ample canvas on which to practice his art. Fewer than thirty of these very rare commemorative coins survive today. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
