Eerie Comics #1 (Thorpe & Porter, 1951) CGC GD 2.
Eerie Comics #1 (Thorpe & Porter, 1951) CGC GD 2.0 Cream to off-white pages. This UK edition is of great historical importance in Britain's anti-comics campaign started by George Pumphrey. In fact, this very issue was the first horror comic Pumphrey had seen, and it prompted his starting the campaign that, like a similar one conducted by Dr. Fredric Wertham in the US, resulted in the banning of such horror comics in the UK. This comic book was denounced in the House of Commons in 1952, and Pumphrey's Guide for Parents and Teachers (1956) cites stories from this compilation, a derivative of Avon's publication in the US. Because parents were encouraged to destroy such offensive horror comic books, and since this book was specifically lambasted, few copies have survived. This is the only copy of this comic book to be certified by CGC to date. Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 6/05: 1 in 2.0, none higher.
