Edwin Vose “Bull Head” Sumner Autograph Letter Signed as Captain of Dragoons “E V Sumner”. One page, 8” x 10”, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, February 20, 1835, in ink, to Major A. Mackey, Philadelphia. In this letter Edwin Vose Sumner (1797-1863) inquires when uniforms and forage caps will be complete and ready to ship to his regiment of Dragoons. He writes in part: “Will you ask the Comy General some time when you meet him, at what times the great coats and forage caps will be done, and drop me a line about it - These articles are indispensable to the comfort and military appearance of the men, and I am very anxious to get them.” Sumner was quite a character. He acquired the nickname of “Bull Head” from a legend that a musket ball once bounced off his head. He was the oldest field commander during the Civil War. The letter has the usual fold creases and slightly toned with age, else it is bright, legible and in fine condition. Comes with a 6.75” x 9” engraved portrait of Sumner from the Civil War period mounted on a paper backing sheet.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
