Edwin M. Stanton Autograph Letter Signed About Patronage Autograph Letter Signed, 1 full page, 8" by 10" , Washington, December 24, 1859. To the Hon. L.W. Maynard. In very fine condition. With typed transcription. "Lincoln's Mars" was hardly the one to go about looking for, and giving away, jobs: most of his letters are martial in tone. But before he became Buchanan's Attorney-General, or Lincoln's Secretary of War, or Johnson's, too, he was a lawyer - and perhaps he hadn't quite perfected of his infamous talent for saying "no" in the most obnoxious way possible, a trait which would, soon enough, make him hated by virtually everyone. In this letter, he seems to say "maybe." In part: "I shall be very glad to see you in Washington. Nothing new has occurred in relation to the Judgeship and there is not any immediate prospect that there will be a vacancy 'tho it may happen any day. When you come here we will confer fully in relation to the matter..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
