Edwin Stanton autograph letter signed as Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of War. Dated 21 August 1862, letter to Colonel McCallum, military superintendent of the Union railroads reads in part: ''Dear Sir / This note will introduce you to Mr. [illegible]…long and favorably known to the President…If you can give him any post or duty that is agreeable to him in which he can serve the government you will please do so. In all events you will report to me on the subject as early as possible / Yours truly / Edwin M Stanton''. With additional postscript initialed ''EMS''. Single-page letter on War Department stationery measures 7.75'' x 10''. Framed with an etching of Stanton to an overall size of 21.5'' x 17.5''. Near fine.
