American essayist and critic (1819–1886) who was a member of the illustrious Boston literary circle that included Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. ALS signed “E. P. Whipple,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.5 x 9.5, October 22, 1855. Letter to an editor, in full: “I will get the novel you mention, as soon as it is published, and write a notice if possible for the Dec. number. I have just got the proofs of Longfellow’s poems, and I think I can send the revised by Oct. 29. It will be published between Nov. 15 and Nov. 30.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through two letters of the signature) and slight creasing and toning. During this time period, the only poem Longfellow had in press was the famous ‘Song of Hiawatha,’ which was published in Boston in 1856.
