American poet and lecturer (1852–1940) whose poem of social protest, ‘The Man with the Hoe,’ brought him worldwide acclaim. Signed copy of ‘The Man with the Hoe,’ one page, 8.5 x 14, signed at the bottom in black ink. Edwin Markham, 1931.” He has added at the top of the page, “I send this Hoe-poem also to the Lincoln Memorial University because Lincoln, as every one knows, had a strong affection for the common people. E. M.” Beneath his initials he was written and then circled, “Staten Island, N. Y.” Few small tears, several horizontal folds, a uniform shade of mild toning, and a few light edge creases, otherwise in fine condition.
