Edwin M. Stanton Civil War Content ALS
Edwin M. Stanton Civil War Content Autograph Letters Signed as Secretary of War. Includes a small two page, 6” x 4”, autograph letter dated March 11, 1862, Washington, to General John E. Wool, which reads in part: “Let the name of the gun heretofore Known as the Floyd be changed & hereafter be Called the Lincoln - What are you now doing with the 2 big guns - Can they be Mounted on the beach for defense do you want any aid in mounting them?” In the early days of the Civil War, Wool’s decisive moves helped secure Ft. Monroe, Virginia for the Union. This vital fort overlooked the Chesapeake Bay and Stanton’s letter most likely addresses Wool’s preparation for holding the fort. The other letter, one page, 7.75” x 10”, Washington, March 14, 1862, marked “Private” and “General Butler” marked at the top, reads in part: “Will you please cause the operations of General Butler’s Quarter Master, Capt. Paul R. George, to be investigated and reported upon by some reliable detective, or other competent person, and also report any facts that may come to your knowledge respecting his transactions in regard to General Butler’s Expedition.” Captain George’s transgressions may be lost to history but it is known that he was discharged from service just six days later on March 20, 1862 and his appointment negated by the U. S. Senate. Each letter is signed “Edwin M. Stanton”. Each letter is toned, else legible and in very good condition. Ex. Henry E.
