Edwin M. Stanton Autograph Letter Signed
Edwin M. Stanton Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of War “Edwin M. Stanton”. One page, 7.75” x 10”, on War Department letterhead, Washington, May 4, 1865. In this letter Stanton writes in part: “Major Scott will take charge of the Steamer River Queen at the Arsenal Wharf tomorrow morning and escort Mrs. Major General Halleck and her party of friends to Richmond & back.” With the war barely a few weeks over, apparently Mrs. Halleck and her friends want to make a sight-seeing excursion to the recently fallen Confederate capitol and to visit her husband, Major General Henry Wager Halleck, had just been assigned to command the Military Division of the James, headquartered in Richmond. With the usual fold creases, and some tape repairs on the verso, else very good. Includes a contemporary engraving of Stanton excised from a book. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
