Edwin L. Sabin: Kit Carson Days 1809 - 1868 Adventures in the Path of Empire. (New York: The Press of the Pioneers, Inc., 1935), second revised edition, two volumes, 996 pages including Appendix, Notes, and Index, green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine and front board, 8vo (6.5" x 9.25"), glassine dust jackets covered with clear Mylar protective jackets. Contains 20 full page drawings by Howard Simon. Legendary Western author J. Frank Dobie called this biography of Kit Carson "A work long standard, rich in rendezvous, bears, and many other assorted topics." The version of Sabin's wonderful biography of Christopher "Kit" Carson presented here is much preferred to the 1914 first edition, expanding the narrative by adding over 300 pages of text and notes. The biography's author, Edwin Sabin, was an Iowa newspaper reporter and popular historian who wrote dozens of general biographies on famous Western figures ranging from General George Custer to Calamity Jane. He even moved from his professional base of Chicago to Denver and then San Diego, California to be closer to the frontier West, living over two decades upon the land that and with the people who populated his literary landscape.

Kit Carson stands tall among the mythic figures of the American West. Like most other famous names associated with the West, Kit Carson's reputation today is based more on legend and fiction than anything he actually did. Carson was a trapper, guide, Mexican War and Civil War combatant, Indian fighter and more, but some of the tall tales surrounding Carson have only grown taller over the years, in no small part due to the gluttony of dime novels, songs, comic books, movies, and television portrayals that have celebrated him. Sabin's two-volume biography is a rare chance to read a serious scholarly treatment of Carson the man. The set presented here is in fine condition, save for the glassine dust jackets. The corners show barely noticeable rubbing, and there are a few dark thumbprints on the top edge of each textblock. The glassine dust jackets show noticeable edge wear, typical of the ephemeral nature of the thin material. The outer-most clear plastic protective jackets have prevented any further damage to the glassine. The interior textblocks are clean and bright, with each volume showing only mild discoloration of the endpapers and a previous retailer's blind-stamp at the bottom of each front free endpaper. The binding is tight, and the presentation value stunning on this beautiful set of Sabin's Kit Carson Days. The set comes housed in its original green cloth slipcase and is further protected by a newer custom quarter leather slipcase with gilt lettering and five raised bands on the spine. This custom slipcase fits over the original slipcase, and further protects this grand biography of The Fighting Trapper.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
