American muralist, illustrator, and painter (1852–1911) who is best known for his drawings and paintings of Shakespearean and Victorian subjects, as well as for his painting of Edward VII's coronation. His most famous set of murals, The Quest of the Holy Grail, adorns the Boston Public Library. Scarce ALS signed “Edwin A. Abbey,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, April 9, 1885. In part: "I am writing to know whether an advance can be obtained of Missr. Sampson Low—on account of the next batch of drawings—some of which are now in process of manufacture—It amounts I should say to a 4 weeks perhaps seven weeks…of £130…I have been working very hard on my annual picture—and have spent all my available cash on it. Its opening is in America. I don't know where—or I should not bother you with this—My rent came…a couple of weeks ago—and I have not the wherewithal to pay." In fine condition.
