Edward White NASA Certificate
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Gemini astronaut Edward White's ''Exceptional Service Medal'' certificate presented to him by NASA in 1965, two years before White's tragic death in launch testing for the Apollo 1 mission. Certificate was obtained directly from the White family's personal collection and is accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity from his son, Edward White III. Beautifully rubricated and illuminated certificate reads, ''The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Presents the NASA Exceptional Service Medal to Edward H. White / For outstanding contributions to space flight and engineering. His performance as Pilot, during the four-day Gemini Mission and as the first man to engage in self-propelled extravehicular activity significantly extended our knowledge of the space environment and man's capabilities in space flight.'' Signed by NASA Administrator James E. Webb, certificate features NASA seal at lower left. Measures 13.5'' x 10.5'', in very good condition. Actual medal is not present. Also included in the lot are two photos taken at the medal presentation ceremony at Washington, D.C. on 17 June 1965, as follows: (1) a color 8'' x 10'' photo of President Johnson standing between McDivitt and White on the White House steps. Both astronauts are wearing their medals; and (2) a black and white 10'' x 8'' photo with NASA caption on the verso showing President Johnson pinning the medal on White's lapel. Fellow Gemini 4 astronaut James McDivitt is clearly seen in the photo with his matching Exceptional Service Medal citation.
