WESTON, EDWARD. 1886-1958. Autograph letter signed, 1936. Two sheets (undated); envelope postmarked Los AngelesOakland, July 1315, 1936. 8 12in x 11in. Condition: Letter is in good condition; folded twice, light creasing. The envelope is torn open at the top, and the stamp is cut off, creases; Harriet Dean's notations. The envelope is addressed to Harriet Dean (1892-1964), the letter to "Pal, Pellie, and Kay" (Harriet, Elsie Martinez, Micaela Martinez). Weston writes that he has " worked for the first time in monthsI mean for myselfat the Oceano Dunes last week. Got some, in fact many negatives which collectively are perhaps my finest to date." He goes on to ask for information on the Guggenheim, and if they can pass on any information about applying for the grant, as he is in need of a "release" to work. He also sends greetings to Virginia S. Hale ("Naya"). Weston's project capturing the Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve, south of Pismo Beach in Southern California, began in 1934. It was in 1936 that Weston moved to the area with his wife, Charis Wilson, in order to be there over time to capture the effects of the changing light on the dunes.
